Student Visa
(Studenten Visum)
Updated: 15.04.25
If you’re aspiring to pursue higher education in Berlin, securing a student visa is a crucial step in your journey. This guide provides a comprehensive overview of the step-by-step process to obtain a student visa in Berlin, allowing you to immerse yourself in academic excellence and a vibrant cultural experience.
Step 1: Admission to a German University
Before anything else, you must be officially accepted into a German university or Hochschule in Berlin. Most universities use Uni-Assist to process international applications. Receiving your admission letter is mandatory — without it, your visa application cannot proceed. Ensure your course is accredited and recognized by German authorities.
Step 2: Gather Required Documents
Start collecting the necessary documents for your student visa application:
- Visa Application Form: Complete the national visa application form — we can help with that.
- Passport: Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned stay in Germany.
- Passport Photos: Recent biometric passport-sized photos according to German photo requirements.
- University Admission Letter: Official admission from your chosen university.
- Proof of Financial Means: You need at least €11,904 (as of 2025), proven through:
- A blocked account (Sperrkonto), or
- A Verpflichtungserklärung (Declaration of commitment by a sponsor).
- Health Insurance: Choose a plan accepted by the Ausländerbehörde. We recommend Feather, a digital-friendly provider that’s widely accepted.
- Blocked Account Confirmation: If using a Sperrkonto, submit your confirmation letter.
- Educational Certificates: Include transcripts, diplomas, and relevant qualifications.
- Language Proficiency: Proof of German or English proficiency depending on your program (e.g., TestDaF or IELTS).
- Curriculum Vitae (CV): A full academic and professional history in Europass format.
- Accommodation Proof: Provide a rental agreement or registration certificate (Anmeldung). You can also search for furnished places via Wunderflats.
Step 3: Schedule and Attend a Visa Appointment
Book a student visa appointment at the German embassy or consulate in your home country. If you’re already in Berlin, you may apply directly at the Ausländerbehörde Berlin — though an appointment is still required. Be prepared for high demand and book early.
During your appointment, bring all original documents and be ready to discuss your study plans, funding, and living arrangements.
Step 4: Submit Application and Pay the Fee
Hand in your completed visa application form and all supporting documents. You will also pay a visa fee — typically €75, although this may vary based on your nationality. Make sure to keep the receipt.
Your application will be reviewed, and you may be asked to provide additional documentation if needed.
Step 5: Wait for Processing
Visa processing can take 6 to 12 weeks, depending on your location and time of year. Stay in regular contact with the embassy or consulate for updates. Start early to avoid missing university deadlines.
Step 6: Arrive in Germany and Register Your Address
Once your visa is approved, travel to Germany and register your address (Anmeldung) within 14 days at your local Bürgeramt. Bring:
- Passport
- Rental agreement
- Confirmation from your landlord (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung)
Anmeldung is required for getting a residence permit, opening a bank account, and enrolling at your university.
Step 7: Finalize Enrollment and Residence Permit
Complete your university enrollment by submitting your:
- Health insurance certificate
- Passport & visa
- University admission letter
- Proof of address (Anmeldung)
Then apply for your residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel) at the Berlin Immigration Office. You’ll need your biometric photo, proof of finances, and all supporting documents. Appointments can be booked via the Berlin service portal.
Important Tips
- Start Early: Begin the visa process as soon as you get your admission letter — delays are common.
- Health Insurance: Confirm your plan meets student visa criteria. After turning 30 or graduating, you may need to switch to private insurance.
- Blocked Account 2025 Minimum: €11,904 (or €992/month) — updated annually.
- Working with a Student Visa: You’re allowed to work 120 full days or 240 half days per year. Exceeding that may require a special permit.
- Stay Informed: Rules change. Check the Federal Foreign Office or Berlin.de for latest visa regulations.
- Academic Enrollment: Don’t miss your university deadlines. Some require a separate enrollment process even after you’re admitted.
