Federal Education Funding Act
(BAföG)
Updated: 14.04.25
Starting your studies in Berlin as an international student is a mix of excitement and challenges. But worry not! Getting financial help through BAföG can make things easier. Our guide is here to make the process simple for you. Let’s navigate it together!
Step 1: What is BAföG?
BAföG is a government financial aid program that helps students cover their living and education expenses while studying in Germany. It combines a 50% grant (non-repayable) and a 50% interest-free loan. As of 2025, students may receive up to €992 per month, depending on individual need. BAföG ensures that financial hardship doesn’t limit access to higher education.
Step 2: Who is Eligible?
To qualify for BAföG, you must meet certain criteria:
Be enrolled full-time at a recognized higher education institution in Germany
Be under 30 years old when starting a Bachelor’s degree, or under 35 for a Master’s
Be studying for your first degree (some exceptions apply for a second degree)
Show financial need based on your and your family’s income and assets
International students can qualify if they hold permanent residence, have refugee status, or have lived in Germany long enough under certain legal conditions.
Step 3: Gather Required Documents
Before starting your application, collect the necessary documents:
Valid ID or passport
Enrollment certificate (Immatrikulationsbescheinigung)
Residence permit (for international students)
Proof of housing (rental contract)
Bank statements, income records (your own, and from parents or spouse if applicable)
Latest tax return or income documentation for self-employed parents
Additional documentation may be required depending on your situation. A full list is available on the official BAföG portal.
Step 4: Apply Online
Use the official BAföG portal at bafoeg-digital.de to submit your application. After registering an account, fill in the online forms and upload your supporting documents. Alternatively, you can download the paper forms and submit them by mail, though this may take longer.
Step 5: Be Aware of Deadlines
Although there’s no national deadline, you should apply early—at least 2 to 3 months before the start of your semester. BAföG payments can be backdated to the beginning of the month your application is received. Renewals should be submitted around 8 weeks before your current funding expires. Check with your local Studentenwerk for specific submission timelines.
Step 6: Wait for the Decision
After submission, your BAföG office will review your documents. Processing usually takes 4 to 8 weeks. You may be contacted for missing documents or clarification. Once reviewed, you’ll receive a notification (BAföG-Bescheid) detailing your approved amount and payment schedule.
Step 7: Receive and Use the Funds
Approved BAföG amounts are transferred monthly to your bank account. You can use the funds to cover rent, food, transportation, health insurance, and academic materials. From 2024 onward, BAföG can also be used for costs like exam fees, language courses, and study tools, provided you have receipts and justification.
Step 8: Renew Each Year
BAföG is granted for one academic year and must be renewed annually. The renewal process is easier and often requires fewer documents, especially if your financial situation hasn’t changed. Apply early through the BAföG digital portal to ensure continuous support.
Step 9: Repay the Loan Portion
Only the loan part of your BAföG must be repaid, starting five years after your standard study period ends. The total repayment is capped at €10,010. Repayment is interest-free and can be adjusted or delayed based on your income. Early repayment or high academic achievement may qualify you for partial loan forgiveness.
This step-by-step guide helps you understand and apply for BAföG with clarity and confidence, ensuring you get the support you need during your studies in Germany.
