BVG Student Ticket

(BVG-Studententicket)

Updated: 14.04.25

Step 1: Check if You Qualify

Before starting your BVG adventure, make sure you qualify. You need to be a full-time student enrolled at a recognized Berlin or Brandenburg university that participates in the Deutschlandsemesterticket program.

Step 2: Get Your Student Certificate

Your access to public transport begins with your enrollment certificate (Immatrikulationsbescheinigung). This document confirms your student status and is usually available after you pay your semester fees. It can be digital or printed – just make sure you have it ready.

Step 3: Confirm Semester Ticket Inclusion

As of summer semester 2024, the Deutschlandsemesterticket has replaced the old SemesterTicket in Berlin and Brandenburg. The ticket costs €29.40 per month and is typically already included in your semester fees. If it’s not, check with your university about how to purchase it or opt for alternative tickets. Some universities offer flexibility for students who qualify for financial assistance.

You can find more ticket details on the BVG and VBB websites.

Step 4: Get Your Deutschlandsemesterticket

Most universities provide the ticket in digital form through transport apps (such as BVG or S-Bahn) or via your university’s student portal. Your university will inform you about how to access it once your enrollment is confirmed. Be sure to follow all steps to activate your ticket.

Step 5: Understand Your Semester Ticket

Your Deutschlandsemesterticket allows you to use public transportation across Germany – including buses, U-Bahn, S-Bahn, trams, and regional trains (RB/RE). It does not cover long-distance trains like IC, EC, or ICE. The ticket is valid for one full semester.

If your enrollment status changes during the semester, notify your university right away. Refunds or changes may be available in some cases.

Step 6: Lost or Damaged? Report It

If you lose access to your ticket (e.g., lose your phone or uninstall the app), contact your university or the app provider. You can usually restore it by logging in again. If there’s a problem, your university’s student office can help.

What if your BVG ticket is not included in your semester fees?

If the Deutschlandsemesterticket isn’t included in your semester contribution, you still have options:

  • Deutschlandticket for Students (€60/month): Valid for travel throughout Germany on all local and regional public transport.

  • Free School Student Ticket: Available only for school pupils (not university students), valid in zones AB.

  • Social Ticket (€19/month): Available for those receiving financial assistance in Berlin (e.g., BAföG).

Check the most current ticket options and eligibility requirements on the BVG website.

Now you’re all set to explore Berlin and beyond with your student ticket. Enjoy the ride and make the most of your time as a student in the city.
