Dog Registration
(Hund registrieren)
Updated: 17.04.25
Step 1: Microchip Your Dog
In Berlin, it is mandatory for all dogs to be microchipped. This provides unique identification for your dog and is required for the registration process. A veterinarian can easily implant the microchip.
Step 2: Complete the Dog Registration
Register your dog with the official Zentrales Hunderegister (Central Dog Register). This can be done online, by phone, or in person. You will need to provide basic details such as the breed, color, microchip number, and your contact information. The registration fee is 17.50 € online or 26.50 € for mail-in registration.
Step 3: Dog Tax Registration
Dog owners must pay an annual Hundesteuer (dog tax). This is handled automatically through the Zentrales Hunderegister after registration. The tax for the first dog is 120 € per year, and for each additional dog, it’s 180 €.
Step 4: Liability Insurance
It is legally required to have liability insurance for your dog in Berlin. This insurance covers damages your dog may cause to others. You must show proof of this insurance when registering.
Step 5: Receive the Registration Confirmation
Once your registration is complete, you will receive a confirmation along with a dog tag (Hundemarke). The dog tag must be attached to your dog’s collar and serves as a visual identifier.
Step 6: Keep Information Updated
It’s important to inform the Zentrales Hunderegister and your local Bürgeramt (resident office) of any changes, such as a new address, the dog’s death, or a change in ownership.
Step 7: Observe Local Regulations
Berlin’s regulations for dogs may vary slightly by district. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the specific rules in your area, such as leash laws and designated dog areas.
By following these steps, you can ensure that your dog is legally registered and compliant with Berlin’s regulations.
