(Geburtsanmeldung)
Updated: 15.04.25
Welcoming a new member to your family is a joyous occasion, and part of this process involves registering the birth of your child. This guide provides a step-by-step overview of the process to register a newborn in Germany, ensuring that your child’s birth is properly documented.
Step 1: Determine the Registration Location
The birth of your child must be registered in the registry office (Standesamt) in whose district the child was born at. The birth is then certified there and birth certificates can be issued. You will receive a total of 3 free certificates for parental benefit (Elterngeld), child benefit (Kindergeld) and health insurance (Krankenkasse). You will have to pay fees for additional birth certificates for your personal records.
Here is a list of all the registry offices (Standesämter) in Berlin.
Step 2: Gather Required Documents
Before heading to the registry office, gather the necessary documents:
- Application form.
- Birth Certificate from the Hospital: Obtain the birth certificate issued by the hospital or midwife who attended the birth.
- Parent’s Identification: Bring your personal identification documents, such as passports or ID cards.
- Marriage Certificate (If Applicable): If you’re married, provide the marriage certificate.
- Proof of Residence: Bring documents showing your current address in Germany.
- Father’s birth certificate translated to german
- Paternity recognition for the father (in case the parents are not married).
