Child Benefits

(Kindergeld)

Updated: 15.04.25

Kindergeld, also known as child benefit, is a valuable form of financial support provided to parents or legal guardians in Germany. This guide outlines the step-by-step process of applying for Kindergeld, helping you access this essential benefit for the well-being of your child.

Step 1: Understand Your Eligibility

Kindergeld is a monthly child benefit offered by the German government to support families. You’re generally eligible if you live in Germany with your child and meet one of the following criteria:

  • You are a German citizen.

  • You are an EU/EEA citizen living and working in Germany.

  • You hold a valid residence permit that allows access to public benefits (e.g. Aufenthaltstitel, Niederlassungserlaubnis, or Blue Card).

Children are eligible up to the age of 18, or up to 25 if they are in full-time education or training. In some special cases, it may be extended beyond this.

Step 2: Prepare Your Application

Gather the following documents before applying:

  • The official application form (we can assist you with this).

  • Your child’s birth certificate.

  • Valid identification documents (passport or ID) for both parents.

  • Tax Identification Numbers (Steuer-ID) for both the applicant and the child.

  • Proof of residence in Germany (Meldebescheinigung or registration certificate).

  • Your German bank account details for payments.

  • For non-EU citizens: valid residence permit.

Make sure all documents are translated into German if originally issued in another language.

Step 3: Submit the Application

Send your completed application with all required documents to your local Familienkasse. You can do this by mail. Some regions also allow digital submission through the Familienkasse or ElterngeldDigital portals.

Ensure everything is complete to avoid delays in processing.

Step 4: Wait for Approval

Once your application is received, the Familienkasse will review it. This process can take several weeks. If approved, you will receive a written notice with payment details. The current Kindergeld amount is €255 per month per child.

If the office requires additional information, they will contact you.

Step 5: Keep Your Information Updated

You must inform the Familienkasse of any changes in your situation, such as:

  • A change in residence.

  • Changes in marital status or custody.

  • Your child finishing school or moving abroad.

Regular reviews may occur, especially once your child turns 18. Be prepared to submit updated information or certificates of education or training.

Helpful Tips

  • Apply as soon as your child is born and registered in Germany.

  • Always keep copies of everything you submit.

  • Contact the Familienkasse if you have questions or if your documents change.

  • Kindergeld is not automatically extended beyond age 18 – plan ahead to submit proof of ongoing education.
